EXPLORE - Now that you have your freshman year behind you, it’s time to explore and start making connections between your interests, strengths, academic subjects, careers and college majors. It’s going to be a fun year!
The Basics
Reflection: What worked and did not work during your freshman year? What do you need to do differently?
Goal Setting: Set your Sophomore SMART Goals for the fall and spring semesters.
Preparation and Organization: How is your organization system working? Do you need to make some adjustments? If so, what adjustment will you make to be better prepared and organized to handle your daily responsibilities?
Prioritizing and Time Management: How is this area going for you? This can be a constant challenge since you have so much on your plate. Do not give up – prioritize and set daily goals – take things one day at a time if needed. Talk with your teachers, parents, counselors and friends to see if they can give you any helpful tips.
Communication and Support: If you did not get a chance to meet your counselor or the college/career coordinator during your freshman year, then this is the year to connect with them. Make an appointment during the fall semester to check in and ask any questions you may have about academic support or college and career planning.
Balance: How did you do with balance last year? Be intentional about creating balance in your life. Remember to make time for family, friends and fun! Academics
Review Transcript, St. Augustine 4-Year Academic Plan, GPA, Attendance. Any concerns? See your counselor ASAP!
Remember that colleges look at grades and coursework for the first three years of high school to make admission decisions and award merit-based scholarships. Your high school academic performance is very important!
Study Skills: If you are struggling at any time, your first step is to talk with your teacher, next seek tutoring or meet with your counselor/academic adviser.
Look ahead at your junior course schedule and testing and confirm that you are on track to meet graduation requirements. Confirm ACT Aspire date (usually in October) and utilize preparation resources available at www.collegeboard.org, ACT.org, Khan Academy. All St. Augustine sophomores take the ACT Aspire administered at the St. Augustine campus.
Extracurricular Activities
If you did not get involved in a sport or club last year, then it’s time to do so! This is another important component to the college preparation process. College admission and scholarship applications ask you to list your extracurricular activities because they are looking for well-rounded students. They are looking for the amount of time you devoted to an activity and why you chose this activity. This is more important than having many activities for short periods of time. Choose an activity that you enjoy or have a passion for; do not engage in activities just to look good on a resume.
If you were involved during your freshman year, where you a member or leader? Demonstrating leadership is also another important component for college admission.
Accomplishments
Update your resume/brag sheet you started during your freshman year. Include awards, certificates, recognitions, extracurricular activities, leadership positions, etc.
Keep all of this information in a file folder and add to it as you continue to build on your accomplishments. Career & College Planning
